Compare homes, lots, or builder bids side by side by cost per square foot to see which is the better value.

How this calculator works

Cost per square foot is the total price divided by the size, which puts homes or bids of different sizes on equal footing. When comparing, measure the same way for every option: heated (conditioned) living area is the usual standard, and garages, porches, and unfinished basements should be left out or listed separately. A lower cost per square foot is not always a better deal, since location, lot size, finishes, and what a bid includes can matter more, so use it as a starting point for a closer look.

Common questions

How do you calculate cost per square foot?

Divide the total price by the square footage. For a fair comparison, use the same measurement for every option, usually heated living area, and leave out garages and porches.

Is the lowest cost per square foot the best deal?

Not always. Location, lot, finishes, and what a builder bid includes can matter more. Use it as a starting point for a closer comparison.
